I have heard legendary tales of “real authors” who get to go on great retreats to wonderful get-away places to write amazing works. I didn’t get to do something like that when I was writing “Fortify Your Soul”. But, it just so happened that I got to review the editors notes while I was spending a lingering month on an island in the Gulf of Mexico. (Some photos below.)
Look at this stunning clear Gulf Coast Water in Boca Grande, FL~!
This is not the kind of vacation that Brook and I normally get to take. A whole month~! We are self-employed, and we don’t get “paid vacation days”. If we don’t work, we don’t make money. So, it has been quite some time since we’ve taken a break from our normal, everyday life. My Mom has a lovely home on the coveted island of Boca Grande/ Gasparilla Island, and she has been inviting us down all the while. Finally, we packed up the bikes, the dogs, and loaded up for a good, long break.
That’s me and my bike. Boca Grande, FL.

While there, I spent 10 days rereading “Fortify Your Soul” and poring over the editor’s revised text. During those same days, Brook and I went out for bike rides and explored. I swam in the 80-something degree Gulf of Mexico. And Brook and I were able to spend a wonderful amount of time with my Mom and Jim.
Mom’s back porch, overlooking the lagoon. This is where we would hang out the most. And there is our dog Boaz. He loved it out there.
The view from my bedroom in Boca Grande, FL. Many mornings we looked out to see manatees swimming in the lagoon.
Turquoise blue water in Boca Grande, FL. Truly a mind blowing color. I was in awe.
Laurie Hayden Bergey on Banyan Street, Boca Grande, FL. The street is lined on both sides with these crazy-cool walking trees. There were always people there exploring and taking pictures (like us~!). I don’t think I’d want to live on Banyan Street~!
My beach in Boca Grande… I’m not telling you where it is~! I want it to stay this empty~!
This was the view from the water while swimming on “my beach” in Boca Grande, FL. I walked out into the water, amazed at how warm it was… so warm that even I could wade right into the water~! I turned around to look back at the shore, and this is what I saw. This became my favorite beach.
I wanted to post about who will be writing the forward to my book, Fortify My Life. But, I couldn’t pull together all the information that I wanted to assemble, with links and video. So, until tomorrow…… (I hope?).
I’m actually not much of a procrastinator, but I got a kick out of this image. It made me chuckle. So, here’s a tiny touch of humor, and I’m off to bed.
Friday the 13th / Look for things to go well…
My contemplation today is a bit like this:
If you look for something to go wrong, you’ll most likely find things that go wrong.
However, if you look for things to go well, you’ll most likely find that things go well~!
With some fear and trembling, I write my 1st post on this new “Fortify My Life” Blog. I have been involved with this “40” project for about 3+ years now. Actually, it probably was born when I turned 40, 7 years ago. I was in a Bible Study at that time, and there was a question about the number 40 in the Bible. I suspect that I was more interested in the question because it happened to be my age. So, I did some extra research and came up with about 10 interesting citations of the number 40. They were interesting and uplifting stories of people overcoming adversity, and getting wonderful breakthrough, starting fresh new lives. My husband turned 40 six months later. His brother turned 40 the next year. When my brother turned 40, he was having an especially hard time. Telling me that he wanted to get his “$#!+” together, he put himself into a situation in which he could make a serious whole-hearted change. All the while, his loving sister wrote him 40 “fortifications” revolving around the use of the number 40 in the Bible. Now, I am sure that put in these terms, the topic sounds sort of dry. But, that couldn’t be farther than the truth.
In the months and years ahead, I don’t plan to share a dissertation on the number 40. Rather, I plan to share some of the secrets that will help us all “fortify our lives”. I hope to publish the collection of 40 letters that I wrote to my brother, now in book form with questions for contemplation at the end of each chapter. I want to share wisdom and insights from the Bible with people who are interested in the Bible. And, I’d like to share tips and speculations with people who want a better life, but are not interested in the Bible. I also want to see how much happier we can be, how much more positive our lives can be starting right now, and improving from here on out. I know that my positive emotional state effects my physical health, and the lives of my loved ones. I want us all to be fortified in Heart & Mind & Body & Spirit.
Last year I played around with a book jacket type of description for the “40 Book”. Even though this may be radically changed, and printed under another name, here is a link to see my playful attempt at designing my own jacket back: 40fy My Life
